Aladdin's Lamp Hut
Located one quarter mile off highway 550, at 10,500 feet, the Aladdin’s Lamp Hut is the only vacation rental on Molas Pass. Nestled below the Grand Turk with spectacular views of the Weminuche Wilderness this single group rustic basecamp accommodates up to 8 people for winter and summer adventures in the San Juan Mountains.
Summertime access is via a short two-wheel drive accessible driveway. Wintertime parking is adjacent to highway 550. Skis or snowshoes are recommended for the 250 yard final approach. Although there is no avalanche hazard approaching the hut, beyond the cabin is avalanche country and the appropriate safety equipment, along with skilled decision making, is necessary.
Hut is self-managed and access is via a keypad code. Renters bring their own bedding or sleeping bags and clean up after their stay. There is an attached outhouse and solar powered DC lighting but no regular AC household power.
The old growth forests surrounding the cabin provide excellent terrain for gentle backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. Above treeline steep powder chutes and stupendous spring corn skiing beckon the more advanced backcountry traveler. Across the highway there is a groomed track for snowmobiling and cross country skiing. In the summer you will find numerous lakes for fishing and floating. The nearby Colorado Trail provides some of the country’s best alpine hiking and mountain biking. In the fall, golden aspen leaves ignite the hillsides and the scenery is a renowned attraction for photographers.
